Q: How can fourth graders best practice new spelling words?
A: It's always best to PRESENT new spelling words in context. So be sure to read meaningful sentences, paragraphs, stories and articles featuring new spelling words. Likewise, ask students to USE words in context. Offer interesting writing prompts and reward students who write more than just a mundane sentence for each new word. Of course, some repetition may be needed to learn the actual spellings of words. But correct meaning should always accompany correct spelling.
