Double the Fun Spelling Game

Here's one of our favorite 3rd grade spelling activities to play with a large group of students or your entire class.

Key Spelling Concepts:

For one-syllable words that have short vowels and end in one consonant, double the final consonant before adding a suffix that begins with a vowel.
Do not double the final consonant before adding a suffix that begins with a consonant.

Instructions

Ask 5-6 students to write a common suffix (word ending) on their own paper.
Ask the rest of the students to write a one-syllable word that has a short vowel sound and ends in a single consonant, such as big, stop, or jam.
Ask one word student to write her word on the board.
Ask for a suffix student whose ending makes sense with the word to write his suffix on the board.
If the last letter of the word should be doubled. the entire class calls out "Double it, double it!" and everyone writes the word with a doubled final consonant on his own paper.
If the last letter of the word should not be doubled, the entire class silently writes the word correctly on their papers.
