3rd Grade Spelling Activities
Double the Fun
one of our favorite 3rd grade spelling activities to play with a large
group of students or your entire class.

- Ask 5-6 students to write a common suffix
(word ending) on their own
- Ask the rest of the students to write a one-syllable word that
has a short vowel sound and ends in a single consonant, such as big, stop, or jam.
- Ask one word
student to write her word on the board.
- Ask for a suffix
student whose ending makes sense with the word to write his suffix on
- If the last letter of the word should be doubled. the
calls out "Double it, double it!" and everyone writes the
word with a doubled final consonant on his own paper.
- If the last letter of the word should not be doubled, the
class silently writes the word correctly on their papers.
