Second Grade Spelling Words

My list of second grade spelling words is a great resource for parents, teachers and students. Use these words for oral and written practice, for spelling games and worksheets. These words were carefully chosen after researching both online and hard-copy published resources.

Remember to teach 2nd graders only a  few words at a time.  About 8-10 words per week is good for most 2nd graders.  When possible, group words in families, such as light, night, and right.

Encourage your child to use his spelling words often, both in wonderful stories from his own imagination, and in factual reports from the world around him.

Each prompt contains at least one of the words from the second grade spelling word list above. My printable page contains fun illustrations to further engage your students. 

Whole Class Activities for 2nd grade spelling - Your students are sure to enjoy playing "Stand & Spell" and "Identity Riddles"!  I've written these games to be used again and again with different spelling words each time. So once your students know how these games work, they'll want to play them over and over! It's SO EASY to practice spelling!

Color Land Game - Kids practice spelling color words as they try to reach the finish line. Follow the link to find my printable game board and playing cards. Laminate the board for best results so kids can use it again and again. Best for early learners. 

Compound Word Wizards - Whole class  or large-group activity for practicing compound  words. This game is great for your top second graders or third grade students. 

Number Spelling Scramble - Students will practice the correct spellings of some tricky number words with this fun page. It's a great way for kids to get in some extra practice with some frequently-misspelled words.  There's a section of spelling tips for the FOUR words (four, forty, fortieth, etc.) as well as FIVE words (fifth, fifteen, fiftieth) and EIGHT words (eighth, eighteen, eightieth and more). It's a fun and very helpful page!

Down on the Farm Word Scramble- A simple list of ten common sights on a farm. Let your child try to unscramble these words alone, or work together. It's great for family time or in the classroom.  Word topics include farm structures, crops, equipment, animals and more.
